REPORT CARDS
Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, October 30th. Please remember that a 2 indicates your child is right where they should be at this point in second grade, exhibiting skills/concepts with minimal guidance. We build on 2s throughout the year, as we work to receive 3s by the end of the year. Receiving a 1, exhibits skill/concept with direct guidance, in any area indicates an area to focus on at home and at school. The goal for the year end is to receive a 3 in every area, demonstrating mastery of all second grade concepts and skills. These report cards do not have a “stair-step” effect, that of advancing one level each marking period. Celebrate 2’s! SCHOOL PICTURES School pictures were sent home in the October 23rd Tuesday folder. If you are not satisfied with your child's pictures, return the entire packet to school. We will hold them until re-takes on November 29th. CCE Sibling Spooky Stories Canyon Creek Siblings 5 and under, join us on Tuesday, October 30th from 10:30-11am at CCE for Spooky Story Time with our Librarian! Non-Scary Costumes are welcome but not necessary. Parents must stay with their children. Contact Family Support Specialist Lisette Castaneda at [email protected] to RSVP. CAVES, CAVES, CAVES Thank you to the parents who volunteered to be chaperones on our trip to Inner Space Caverns! We are looking forward to having you with us on Friday, November 2nd. Please remember to send your child to school with a sack lunch and disposable drink. Please label the lunch and drink with your child’s name. Your child will also need closed toed shoes and may want to bring a jacket. However, it is their responsibility to keep up with the jacket. HALLOWEEN Enjoy all the fun activities that Halloween brings, including parties and trick or treating. I know you will make every effort to keep your children safe as they go house to house. I’m excited to hear about their fun adventures on Thursday morning! After all of the fun, please remember to send your child to school with a healthy snack, not Halloween candy. MODERN PILGRIM REVEAL Anticipation is mounting as we await the arrival of our classroom Modern Pilgrims by Wednesday, November 7. We can’t wait to see our ancestral dolls and to hear the stories that brought each of these special family members to the United States. The prepared paragraph from home should also arrive on Wednesday. Please help your child in writing a paragraph that will share information of their modern pilgrim:
TIED AND DOUBLE KNOTTED If your child does not know how to tie his/her shoelaces, please provide that practice at home. I have several students that do not know how to tie their shoes and they often trip during the day from their dragging laces. Also, second grade students should know their home address and important phone numbers for safety reasons. We have recently discovered that this information is not known by many students. TAG REFERRAL PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. This night is designed for families whose students are not currently enrolled in the TAG program but are interested in testing. Please join us in the library on November 6th at 6:00pm for more information about how to complete the referral process. GOLDEN SPATULA WINNERS! Our class has demonstrated great cafeteria behavior and we have won the Golden Spatula award! Please check your child's planner for a Mighty Fine and Burger King coupon! Congratulations! MODERN PILGRIM DOLLS Your child will come home on Wednesday with a very special homework assignment that is due back Wednesday, November 7th. In class we will read the book, Molly’s Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen. The story depicts the struggles of a modern day family, who has immigrated to the United States, only to find that prejudice is not restricted to one’s homeland. Please reread this story together and return the book by Wednesday, October 31st. This project is a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to work together to fashion a pilgrim doll representative of your family’s cultural heritage. Have fun being creative! Students will be sharing their dolls and oral presentation with their classmates on the November 7th due date. In addition, we are planning a classroom presentation for parents on Thursday, November 15th (Note: this is a different date than the other second grade classes!). This is an excellent opportunity for us to gather together in celebration of the many cultures represented within our classroom. Please mark your calendars! The children will be presenting their ancestral pilgrim dolls to our guests starting promptly after lunch. Each child will have prepared a paragraph at home to share with our guests while displaying their doll. Please arrange childcare for younger siblings. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, November 15, for this very special cultural celebration. CAVES, CAVES, CAVES We will be taking our trip to Inner Space Caverns! We are looking forward to going on Friday, November 2nd. Please remember to send your child to school with a sack lunch and disposable drink. Please label the lunch and drink with your child’s name. Your child will also need closed toed shoes and may want to bring a jacket. However, it is their responsibility to keep up with the jacket. CHAPERONES FOR FIELD TRIP If you checked the little box on the permission form to be a chaperone, please make sure you are registered with our RRISD Volunteer system. https://partners.roundrockisd.org/volunteer/ Chaperones will drive themselves or carpool and will pay $16 admission when they get to Inner Space Caverns. TAG Referral Parent Information Night Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. NEW SNACK PROCEDURE
Beginning today, we will be storing snacks differently in the classroom. Each morning, your child will now be dropping his or her snack off in a bin that I will be holding until snack time. Please make sure that your child's snack(s) have his or her name on each item (written on the plastic bag or sticker with the name on reusable container, etc). Thanks for your help with our new procedure! COOLER WEATHER THIS WEEK! If you have seen the weather forecast, it will be much colder than weeks past! Please make sure to send your child with a jacket labeled with his or her name. RED RIBBON WEEK Next Monday (October 22) is the start of Red Ribbon Week here at CCE. All students will receive a handout in their Tuesday folder that outlines the activities for Red Ribbon Week, ENCOURAGE each other to live healthy!Red Ribbon Week is a special week dedicated to alcohol and drug abuse prevention. For elementary students, we focus on healthy habits and good choices. Remember to send your child dressed in the theme of the day. Monday wear red, Tuesday wear peace signs or tie-dye, Wednesday wear mismatched clothing, Thursday wear warm ups, a track suit or sports cloting, and Friday wear a superhero t-shirt or cape. Sounds like a fun week! UPCOMING FIELD TRIP In the October 9th Tuesday folder, there was a permission slip for your child to attend the field trip to Inner Space Caverns. There will also be a place on the permission slip to indicate if you would like to join as a parent chaperone. Please remember that all parents must have completed the RRISD Volunteer Background check before participating in school events such as field trips. Parents will also provide their own transportation to Inner Space Caverns and will not ride the bus with the students. Please return your child's permission slip, along with $6 (cash or check) as soon as possible. All forms are due by Friday, October 26th. REVIEW OF WORK Each week students bring home graded class work in their Tuesday folder. Please have your child next to you as you review their work. My corrections and comments are to support your child as they take a second look at their assignments. WATER BOTTLES Again, many students are thirsty throughout the day and after our 12:45pm recess time. Please make a habit of sending your child to school with a water bottle on a daily basis. Not only is this a great habit to create for your second grader, but it will also limit our time spent at the water fountain and out of the classroom. TAG Referral Parent Information Night Canyon Creek will be hosting TAG Referral Information Night for families interested in referring their students for TAG testing. This night is designed for families whose students are not currently enrolled in the TAG program but are interested in testing. CONFERENCES
Almost of our parent conferences are now completed, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to meet with each of you. I thoroughly enjoyed discussing your child’s strengths and goals for the year, and I thank you for the enriching help you provide at home. Your kind words of support for all that I do here in second grade were greatly appreciated. It deeply warmed my heart to hear how happy and excited your child is to be sharing this year with me. I am so lucky to have such a loving class of learners. I look forward to the wonderful year of learning and growth ahead for our “classroom family”. EARLY ARRIVALS This year we have had very few tardies, and we appreciate you making every effort to get your child to school on time. Arriving close to 7:30 enables your child to enter the classroom in a relaxed manner which includes recording lunch count, getting his/her backpack unpacked, pencils sharpened, and starting Morning Work. The tardy bell rings at 7:40am. WATER BOTTLES Many students are thirsty throughout the day and after our 12:45pm recess time. Please make a habit of sending your child to school with a water bottle on a daily basis. Not only is this a great habit to create for your second grader, but it will also limit our time spent at the water fountain and out of the classroom. DENIM DRIVE If you have any gently used jeans at home, please send them in. CCE is collecting for the RRISD Clothes Closet. Your donation is greatly appreciated. FALL CONFERENCES
Conferences are such a wonderful opportunities to visit with parents. I have already had several wonderful conversations with parents and have learned so much more about my students. I have a very tight schedule so please help me keep my conferences on time. A gentle knock on the door would be very appropriate should the conference before you be still taking place at the start of your conference time. It will be our sign to wrap things up. I am looking forward to visiting with you as we chat about your child and set goals for the year ahead. A reminder of your scheduled time should have come home in this week's Tuesday folder! DENIM DRIVE If you have any gently used jeans at home, please send them in. CCE is collecting for the RRISD Clothes Closet. Your donation is greatly appreciated. STAR OF THE WEEK We are excited to celebrate Nolan this week! FALL HOLIDAYS As you plan ahead, please remember that there is no school on Monday, October 8th or Tuesday, October 9th. THANK YOU Thank you to so many of our wonderful families for your treasure chest donations. Our treasure chest now has many highly desirable items. Thank you so much for donating to our class, and being so creative in your donations! LOTS OF LEARNING
These past five weeks of school have been wonderful! Our class has embraced the idea of being a classroom family, and I couldn’t be more proud. They are such eager learners, always ready to lend a hand to their peers and celebrate the accomplishments of others. Such sweet, kind-hearted children! Thank you for entrusting your child to my care this year! CONFERENCES If you have not yet returned the conference sheet (2 pages, white and purple), please do so as soon as possible! My conferences will begin next week, up until October 8th. I will be sending home reminders for the conferences in the Tuesday folders this coming week. STAR OF THE WEEK We enjoyed having Thomas as our first Star of the Week last week! It was so much fun getting to know him better and celebrate him! QUALITY WORK
Children are encouraged to do their best work right from the start. For many, this simply means slowing down and checking over their work before turning it in. Family discussions at home regarding this topic is an important part of the puzzle. When looking through your child's Tuesday folder, please help them understand all errors, allowing the "correct and return" work to be returned polished, corrected, and complete. Please sign the top of the assignment. This lets me know that you’ve seen the assignment and checked it for completeness and accuracy. Thank you for supporting your child at home. BOOKS ARE COMING This week, I will place our first order from Scholastic as I work to stock our Book Buck Library. I can't wait to show the children our fully stocked Book Buck store! If you had not yet donated, please send in your donation so I can place additional orders in the future. Suggested donation for each family is $10-$20, payable by check to Scholastic. Our books should arrive soon, so we will have our first “Lucky Seven” week starting this Friday night, September 21, in preparation for our first sale day, Friday, September 28. Lucky Seven is week that I will give your child up to SEVEN Book Bucks! Remember, if you do not total and initial the planner page each Thursday evening, I am not able to award Book Bucks to your child. I appreciate you helping me to make this a positive experience for your child. CAPTURING KIDS HEARTS As you know, CCE has been using the Capturing Kids’ Hearts process for several years. I welcome our students into our classroom each day with a handshake and personal greeting. This is the perfect way to connect with each of my students as we prepare to share another day together. I am delighted to share that our class is working extremely well as a classroom family. They really do love and care about each other. That means are days are filled with learning rather than classroom management. A big shout out to my amazing class! BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Open House for parents is next Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6:00pm. Please make plans to be here and to arrange childcare for your children. I look forward to seeing you! CONFERENCE SIGN UP I will send out a Sign-Up Genius link for conferences soon. Please chosen a time and date for your child's conference as soon as possible. CONFERENCE FORM This week, I will be sending home your child's conference forms. On this form, you will see a section of strengths and a section of areas of improvement. Please choose 2-4 strengths for your child and 2-4 areas of improvement for your child. You will mark your choices in the "P" (for Parent) column. There is a section for goals on the back of the page. Please do NOT complete this, as we will do this together at the fall conference. The purple sheet attached has a similar purpose, but allows for more elaboration on strengths and weaknesses. If you could return these forms as soon as possible, I would appreciate it. Having your form returned promptly allows me to begin planning a meaningful conference for your child. LIBRARY BOOKS Please help your child to remember to return their library books each Friday. Please also encourage your child to select a variety of genres. That’s one of the keys to learning to LOVE reading! That, and finding a “just right book”, one that is not too hard nor too easy. BOX TOPS The Box Top competition is underway! Classes compete against each other to bring in the most Box Tops. The competition started on September 4th and ends September 28th . Those classes in the top five receive prizes. The winning class receives a pizza party provided by Papa John’s Pizza at Volente Plaza. Second place receives an in- class ice cream sundae party provided by HEB. Third place receives an in-class donut party provided by HEB. Fourth place receives an in-class Popsicle party provided by HEB. And fifth place receives 3 free ice cream certificates per student to Dairy Queen. Bonus Box Tops are the key to our class’ victory. HEB runs a promotion (Sept. 5 - 18) in whereby if you purchase 10 Box Top items you receive 60 bonus Box Tops and if you purchase 15 Box Top items you receive 100 bonus Box Tops. Parents can also download the Bonus Box Tops App and get 50 Bonus Box Tops at Walmart when purchasing 5 Box Tops items in a single transaction and scanning the receipt with the app. Get 100 Bonus Box Tops at Sam’s Club for purchasing 3 Box Tops items with the app. Normally, more than half the money raised is from Bonus Box Tops. As such, each student that brings Bonus Box Tops (certificates or emails from the app) of 50 Box Tops or more will also receive a small prize from the prize basket provided by the PTA. Thank you for supporting our school in this way! TUESDAY FOLDERS Each Tuesday afternoon, please spend some time going over your child's Tuesday folder work with them. It's important that the children see how well they completed their work. The corrections I make are really to benefit my students. If there is a “Correct and Return” paper in the folder, please spend time going over that work with your child, making corrections, then put a parent signature on it and return it the next day. Sometimes all it takes is a little more practice, as mastery is around the corner. CHOICES, CHOICES Each day there are four daily lunch entree choices available from the cafeteria. Several students continue to arrive unsure of their decision. Please review the menu each morning, and send your child knowing which choice they’d like, #1, #2, #3, or #4. Also, I have a few students buying treats or ice cream on a daily basis. You may want to have a discussion about this at home if you wish there to be limits. OPEN HOUSE/PARENT NIGHT Open House for parents is next Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6:00pm. Please make plans to be here and to arrange childcare for your children. I look forward to seeing you! HOMEROOM PARENT and VOLUNTEER THANK-YOU I wanted to thank McKala O'Leary-Orta again for volunteering to serve as our classroom’s homeroom parent! Thank you also to all the parents that donated items for our classroom and volunteered to help with class tasks and events! You are so appreciated! CONFERENCE SIGN UP I will be sending out a fall conference sign up form next week. Please make a time and date selection at your earliest convenience so that I can prepare for your child's conference. Our school "conference date" is set for October 8th, a student holiday. However, I will be offering additional dates before and after school in the days leading up to October 8th. Please choose a date that works for your family, as I would like to meet with each one of you to set goals for the year. BOX TOPS It is time for our annual Box Tops Competition! ARRIVALS Students may enter the building as early as 7:20am. Please note, our tardy bell is at 7:40am. Any students arriving after this bell should report to the office for a tardy slip, before entering the classroom. DISMISSALS Dismissals will take place at 2:55pm. Please discuss a consistent meeting place for your child. All walkers and bike riders are to exit the school through the front door by the main office. Our side doors will be for our car and van riders only. Teachers will be walking all students to their destination. Car riders will walk with a teacher out to the car lines, walkers will walk with a teacher to the front door and be released after making contact with a parent, and a teacher will walk all YMCA students to the cafeteria. This arrangement will make for a safer dismissal for all. Please remember that no students should be released from cars, or walk to cars, unaccompanied in the large staff and visitor parking lot. Should you wish to park there at the beginning or end of day for arrival and/or dismissal, please be sure to walk your child across the parking lot and driveway. At both times during the day, this is a very active driveway and students traveling across the driveway and into the parking lot are in harm's way. We very much appreciate your attention to this. SNACKS The children will be given a few minutes to enjoy a small snack each day but there are a few reminders. The snack must be healthy, neat, dry, and easy to eat. Some examples include pretzels, apple slices, granola bars, raisins, fruit snacks, and string cheese. No fruit cups or yogurt, or anything requiring a spoon are permitted, and no drinks other than water. We are usually snacking and continuing to work with many papers and books around. Bringing the snack to school is your child’s responsibility. Should they forget to pack it, please do not bring it to the office. JACKETS/SWEATSHIRTS In addition to a snack, please send a lightweight jacket or sweater daily. Our classroom can get pretty cold at certain times of the day. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Back to School Night is Tuesday, Sept. 11. The meeting will start promptly at 6pm. Thank you for setting up childcare arrangements for this evening so that all parents can hear the important information. I look forward to sharing more about second grade with you! READING MINUTES In second grade, your child will be required to read at least 60 minutes each week. This assignment will involve some record keeping from home. I am asking that you (or your child) record the minutes read nightly. This notation should be made in the yellow box on the right side of the student planner for that day, and parents should initial reading each night. Sixty minutes is a weekly minimum, but I encourage your child to read nightly for 15-20 minutes. On Thursday evening, when you are initialing your child's homework notes in the planner, please take a minute to total the minutes read from the previous week (Friday night – Thursday night). Record this total in Friday's yellow box opposite the nightly homework page and include a parent initial. The pictures below show one suggested method for recording your child's reading minutes. If you would prefer to use the white lines on the left side of the page, that is fine as well. As long as I can see a number of minutes, a parent initial, and a total number of minutes (from Friday to Thursday), I am happy! Nightly reading is crucial to your child's overall reading success, and I appreciate your support! VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION Please use the link on the blog side bar to register as a school volunteer. It is necessary for volunteers to RE-REGISTER EVERY year. I recommend that EVERY parent register, just so you are ready for volunteer opportunities as they arise. WATER BOTTLES Please help your child to stay hydrated by sending a water bottle every day, as our recess time is between 12:45-1:15. We want our students to stay hydrated during this hot time of the day. ABSENCES If your child is going to be absent, please send an email to me and copy Cynthia Quesnel, our CCE registrar, to let us know. Please be sure to state your child’s first and last name, as well as the reason for the absence. Another option is to go to the CCE website. There’s a quick link on the parent page to report an absence. CCE’s school policy is that all missed student work will be saved and given to the child upon their return. We do not prepare work ahead of time for absent students, whether the absence is due to illness or travel. When your child returns to school, the work will be given out and time will be given to complete the work.
