LIVING MUSEUM
Thank you so much for all of your help and support with the Living Museum project. From reading the biographies, to taking notes, from editing papers, to helping with speeches, you have been a pillar of support throughout this project, and we cannot thank you enough. Your children have learned significant things about a person in history and have also learned the value of research. Thank you also for taking the time out of your schedule to come to our presentation on Friday. Having a live audience always makes a project more memorable and valued. We appreciate you so much! VALENTINE’S DAY BAGS Valentine’s bags and a class list were sent home a couple of weeks ago. I hope your children have been thinking of a creative way to decorate their bag. I’ve heard rumors of animal themed bags, Minecraft characters, and all things hearts! If your child hasn’t started on their bag, now is the time! Bags are due in class on Monday, February 11th. Valentine cards may be brought to school starting on that same date. Please be sure your child prepares a Valentine card for every student in the class. Since Valentine's Day is a party day, your child may attach a small piece of candy or treat to their Valentine cards. VALENTINE’S PARTY Our Valentine’s Day party is Thursday, February 14, from 2:00-2:45. Please remember to sign in at the office to pick up your visitor's pass before coming to the classroom. As a reminder, class parties are for parents, grandparents, and students. No child care will be provided for this party. Since siblings are not allowed at the classroom party, please make childcare plans for your little ones. Thank you in advance to our homeroom parents for organizing our Valentine’s Day class party and to all parents helping at the party. The festivities will be so much fun and will include the ultimate thrill….checking out the treasures that await in their Valentine’s Day bags. I love watching the excitement that builds as the children tear open their envelopes! VALENTINE'S PARTY FAST PASS If you are planning on attending or volunteering for your child’s Valentine Party, please complete this form. The office staff will preprint your badge to expedite your check-in! Thank you. Sign up here Reminder no child care will be provided for this party. Siblings are not allowed in the classroom so you will need to make alternate arrangements. IMPORTANT HEALTH MESSAGE We are still seeing many cases of the stomach bug, strep and other illnesses. Thank you for being mindful of the “24 hour rule”! This rule is: students must be fever-free and symptom-free for 24 hours, without medication, before returning to school. LIVING MUSEUM
Your children have worked so hard this week with finishing their research, writing and editing their reports, and working on their final copy. Thank you so much for all of your help from home. You truly are appreciated! This week, we will finish our final copies and will send home a copy of the research paper. Your child will have one night of homework in which they will be asked to pare down their research paper into a manageable speech to present at the Living Museum. On the following nights, they will need to practice their speech so as to deliver it with fluency and clear pronunciation. The Living Museum will come to life on Friday, February 1st at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Parents are invited to join the second grade students as they "become" the famous person they have been researching. I can’t wait to see the creative costumes as they arrive in character. Our program will begin promptly at 8:15am. Please allow ample time for parking and signing in at the office. Thank you for arranging childcare for younger siblings. VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s bags and a class list were sent home in last week’s Tuesday folder. I hope your children have been thinking of a creative way to decorate their bag. LIVING MUSEUM
This week, we will be working hard on writing our biography reports. We will write these papers in class and will need your assistance in editing our work for homework. Each night, please edit your child's work for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If sentences need to be revised to make more sense or add details, please assist your student. It is of utmost importance that these edits and revisions happen each night and are returned to school the next day. We will be working on next steps throughout the week and do not want your student to fall behind. The Living Museum will come to life on Friday, February 2nd at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Please note that this is a change from the original 8:00am time. Due to Kindergarten's 100th day of school presentation and parade, we needed to adjust our start time by a few minutes. Parents are invited to join the second grade students as they "become" the famous person they have been researching. I can’t wait to see the creative outfits as they arrive in character. Our program will begin promptly at 8:15am. Please allow ample time for parking and signing in at the office. I appreciate your support throughout this project, and thank you for arranging childcare for younger siblings. The following week will be much lighter on the biography homework front, as they will just be practicing their speech. STEAM NIGHT We would love for you to join us on Thursday, January 24th for STEAM Night from 6:00-7:00pm. This is an opportunity for your student to share their learning with you and to experience learning from other grade levels. Due to the nature of the event and the importance of keeping all students safe, please remain with your children at all times. VALENTINE’S DAY I wanted to give you plenty of notice so you and your child could do this when time allows in the coming weeks. In preparation for Valentine's Day, your child will need to decorate a bag for their Valentine mail. This bag will be sent home in this week’s Tuesday folder. Bags are due in class on Monday, February 12th. Valentine cards may be brought to school starting on that same date. Please make sure that your child makes a Valentine card for every student in the class. I have included a class list in the Tuesday folder, along with the paper bag. Since Valentine's Day is a party day, your child may attach a small piece of candy or treat to their Valentine cards. Yay! STAYING HEALTHY Please remember that classroom snacks should be healthy, and quick and easy to eat. Snacks should be consumed without making a mess on the tables or floors. With flu season upon us, please remind your children to wash their hands on a regular basis. If they have any symptoms of an oncoming illness, please monitor and consider their school attendance. Although we want to see your child at school, illnesses need to stay home. On that same note, if you would like to donate a container of Wet Wipes to our classroom, we will use them to sanitize our space often! BIOGRAPHY UNIT
This week, I will introduce our Living Museum/Biography Unit to the class. The classroom will soon be abuzz with students reading, researching, and note taking about their chosen famous person. Stay tuned for more details in a note that will be coming home on Monday, January 14th. This note will need to be signed and returned by Wednesday, January 16th. You could help your child each day by checking that your child arrives at school each day with all biography materials, books, notes, and written paragraphs. It is imperative that these things are returned to school on a daily basis to move forward on the project. Please keep in mind that students will need to dress as their character during our Living Museum presentation on Friday, February 1st. Please use the coming days and weeks to begin preparing your child's costume. FOUR DAY SCHOOL WEEK Just a reminder that Monday, January 21st is a school holiday. Enjoy the extra family time! WELCOME BACK
A new semester is here and it’s a time of new beginnings. I hope you had a wonderful break with your family and that you were able to make many new memories together. This week will be a transition as we get back into the routines of school again. We have a wonderful second semester of learning planned, and I’m sure you’ll be amazed at the continued academic growth of your child by the time our year ends. THANK YOU Thank you so much to the class for the Hand and Stone gift card, the gummy bears (my favorite), and the AustiNuts treat! They were the most relaxing gifts to have over the break! Thank you for being so generous and for spoiling me during this holiday season! HOLIDAY PARTY Thank you to all of the parents that helped to make our holiday party a huge success. Special thanks to all of our second grade room moms for their efforts in organizing and running this event and to all who pitched in to assist with the activities during the event. Hope you had a blast too! Thanks for joining us! YUMMY AND DELICIOUS To all of our of our Canyon Creek parents who baked for our cookie extravaganza, many hugs of thanks! The faculty and staff were treated to the most delectable assortment of holiday cookies before the break, and the best part was that we each were able to take two dozen cookies home to our family. To the many bakers, thank you for thinking of us, and putting your personal touch on our holiday cookie event. We know you are swamped with “to-dos” this time of year, and we appreciate you carving out the time to do this for us. READING AT HOME Please remember to total and initial reading logs each week. Reading for one hour a week is a non-negotiable minimum. Most kiddos are now logging two+ hours of reading weekly. The more a child reads, the better they are able to comprehend. Math problem solving now requires our children to be critical readers, so the benefits of reading are far reaching. The start of a new semester may be a great time to try a family book club. Try different genres. Why not invest in a good poetry book? Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky are kid favorites, but the classics are amazing too. There are many collections of poems for children on the internet. Check out this genre for a change. Read the poem and discuss what you notice about the format. Does it rhyme, is there repetition, can you feel a rhythm when you read it? What do you notice about the author’s word choices? Do all poems need to rhyme? What can you infer from the author’s words? Poets, like other authors, often want you to “read between the lines”. But mostly, have fun with reading! Bravo to all who make reading a priority at home. STAYING HEALTHY Please remember that classroom snacks should be healthy and quick and easy to eat. Can you believe that the holiday break is just about here? This next week and a half is going to be busy, but fun. Excitement is certainly in the air! WINTER HOLIDAY PARTY Our class holiday party is on Wednesday, December 19 from 2:00 - 2:55. All parents are invited to attend. Hope to see you there! As another reminder, due to school policy and space limitations, siblings are not allowed at the party. This is a special time for second graders and their parents, so please set up childcare plans for your younger children. LIBRARY BOOKS Please have your child bring in all library books by this week for our Friday library lesson. We would like to make sure that each child has new library books before the Winter Break. SECRET PAL HOMEWORK On Thursday, November 29th, I sent home a Secret Pal Project with your child. This involves each student writing compliments to his/her secret pal. Complete instructions are attached to the materials. Please help your child with this activity. It is due on Tuesday, December 11th. As your child works on this assignment, please remember to include a small gift in the bag as a special surprise to your child’s secret pal. Check out Target’s $1 section or the Dollar Store for gift options. This gift should cost no more than one dollar. Please help your child select something that they would be happy to receive, which usually assures the Secret Pal will be equally delighted. All gifts should be wrapped and include their Secret Pal's name. Students should also make a genuine effort to color or decorate their compliments and write compliments that will truly matter to their Secret Pal. PILGRIM DOLL PRESENTATIONS
I felt so proud when the children presented their Pilgrim dolls to classmates and parents the week before Thanksgiving. Each child worked very hard on this project as they researched their family history, created their doll to represent a family member who immigrated to the United States, and presented it with confidence. I am so proud of their efforts and successes. Thank you for being such an integral part of this assignment and for the many positive comments. I know they were thrilled to be able to share this with you, and I thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to come and join us. HOME MATH PRACTICE Please continue to practice telling time to the minute with your child outside of school. Our class has a good grasp of this, but for many it’s a concept that needs to be practiced more. Now is also the perfect time to break out addition and subtraction flash cards with your child. Please take the time to work with your child on mastering their basic facts to 20. The state expectation is that second grade students will recall basic facts to add and subtract within 20 with automaticity. In the second semester we will be working with greater value numbers, number lines, and using our addition and subtraction strategies on a regular basis for our problem solving. Having quick recall of these basic facts is essential for your child’s success. Please take the time to practice each night, as just 5-10 minutes of practice will pay big dividends this year and in the years ahead. TAG REFERRAL WINDOW The window to refer students not currently identified as TAG for TAG testing is open now through December 7, 2018. If you are interested in referring a student for TAG testing, please click the link below and complete the online form. You can also find the link on the CCE website under "What's Happening". PILGRIM DOLLS
Thank you for all of your help in support in creating your child's Pilgrim Doll and speech. The dolls look fabulous, and the children are so excited to share a piece of their history with you. We have a very diverse group of pilgrims represented through our pilgrim dolls, and the stories that they will tell are just as unique. Thank you for embracing the challenge of this assignment, for working with your child, and for helping to bring our reading of Molly's Pilgrim to life. This is surely to be an experience that your child will never forget. FIELD TRIP
Thank you to all of our brave volunteers who accompanied us on our field trip to Inner Space Caverns. The students had a great time and the extra eyes and hands were so helpful! Thanks for spending your day with us! PILGRIM PRESENTATIONS Thank you for helping your child with their Molly’s Pilgrim clothespin doll homework. I can't wait to see the finished products on Wednesday! It is my hope that this activity provided you with a perfect time to sit with your child and discuss your ancestry. It’s always fun and enlightening for the children to see each other’s dolls and hear about their classmates’ heritage. Before turning in the project, please make a copy of your child's speech to keep at home. We will be working on presentation skills here at school, but please continue to have your child practice their presentation at home so they are able to present their pilgrim doll with little help from their notecard. It should be "polished". Their presentation should include the origin of the country from which their ancestors came, why they came to America, and two interesting facts they’d like to share. I hope you are planning to join us for our presentation on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH at 12:00 PM, right after our lunch time. Note that this is a different time than the other second grade class presentations! As a reminder, all are invited; parents, grandparents, or even a special neighbor. Since time is limited, please allow ample time to park, sign in at the office, and make your way to our classroom so you don’t miss any presentations. I know you’ll be pleased to help us celebrate the ancestral diversity within our classroom. Don’t forget your camera! THANKSGIVING FEAST Our Annual Thanksgiving Day Feast is Wednesday, November 14th during your child’s regular lunch time (11:22-11:52 am). We love to have family members join us!
